Male ancestor. He is crouched, his knees and elbows are connected to each other. The Asmat associated the squat with the attitude of the praying mantis or a frog.
The praying mantis was seen as the primal headhunter because the female of the praying mantis bites of the head of the male when mating. The praying mantis was also a fertility symbol. This explains why the Asmat people figures were frequently depicted squatting.
