Athenian, 470-460 BC - Greece
|Object:||Lekythos with Woman Offering at Altar|
|Dimensions (in cm):||H. 20.1 cm|
|Century/ Timeframe:||Athenian, 470-460 BC|
In the field a woman pouring a liquid over the fire of a low altar. The woman is holding a staff with her left hand and a shallow phial with the outstretched right. She is clad with a heavy himation and a finely pleated chiton, her hair is on a sakkos. The head is turned back with a nonsensical inscription coming out of her mouth – twelve red dots extend in the direction of the phial. Another pseudo inscription with eight vertically arranged dots between her head and the staff.
The composition is characteristic for the Aischines Painter. (Many of his lekythoi show the same woman with different attributes.) The style of the present work is nevertheless superior to his usual painting.
For a related example, cf. Beazley Archive no. 208606 (CVA Erlangen, Antikensammlung der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität 2, 99-100, Fig. 4, Beilage 7.1, Pl. (4426) 41.3, 41.12-13)
Two bands of radiating strokes on the shoulder. Key pattern on top, a reserved band as ground line below. A neat fingerprint (of the painter) below the female figure.
Size: H. 20.1 cm
Culture: Athenian, 470-460 BC
Condition: Missing mouth and handle restored.
The artist covered a dent and an accidental black stroke along the woman’s mouth with red pigment to recuperate the initial color of the clay. The area of the lower lip and cheek is properly retouched now.
Faded red color for the spoken words, the liquid out of the phial and the fire on the altar. Some preliminary sketch. Pitted black glaze retouched in places, sinter deposits.
