Middle of the 20th century - Reasonable condition
Within the Dogon culture the Toguna (Togouna) is an important and symbolic forked trunk which should hold up the roof of the ' Community Men's House. This monumental roof carriers (logs) range from 150 to 200 cm and can sometimes have a weight of 80 kg.
Miniature Toguna's are very rare. These were placed on an altar indoors. Their function is not entirely clear, but it is believed that menstruating women with a strong desire to have children (who were absolutely not allowed in the men ' Community House ') visited this altar with offerings (food, fruit, flowers) in hopes to get pregnant.
Beautiful object with mythological (?) performances
Age: mid 20th century-very hard & heavy wood. Because of this extreme hardness there is only superficial termite damage. See pictures.
Although this is a miniature Toguna, it still has a respectable height of 71 cm (88.5 cm incl. stand).
Old Belgian collection.
