A Songye (Congo tribe) power image used to combat witchcraft and sorcery. These images were thought to bring good fortune and success. Also used to enhance fertility. Large ones served the community, smaller ones were for individual families.
Many of the features of the images for the Songye show a relationship to the masks of the Kifwebe, this statue serves as an example. Several layers of fabric, crop, textile, rope and metal appear on the statue. The figure wears red fabric around the waist (loin cloth).
Left leg is partly missing and has been replaced by an iron nail. Stands upright.
