¶ Jacob Campo Weyerman (1677-1747) was one of the most important writers from the Enlightenment in the Netherlands. His work consists of satirical magazines, plays and biographies of painters.
Weyerman wrote prose in an expressive and colourful style, in which sometimes street noise and pub gossip can be heard. As a discerning spectator, he mockingly commented on people and situations of his time. The special literary quality of Weyerman’s work is not the only reason why his work is worth reading. Especially his weekly magazines are a rich source of cultural historical information. These magazines not only contain the ideas of the Enlightenment, but also the reality of everyday life: the coffee houses, fashion trends and phenomena such as collections of curiosities and stock trading. Weyerman was also well aware of the cultural and literary life in Europe. His personal life was anything but boring.
