Design for the decoration of the cupola, St Paul's Cathedral. The dome of St. Paul's Cathedral in the City of London is home to the original murals created between 1715 and 1719 by court painter Sir James Thornhill (1676 - 1734), featuring these scenes from the life of Saint Paul (c.AD 5 – c.AD 67). 

Lettered along the bottom with a quotation from the Acts of the Apostles, "Mutati dicebant esse Deum", and "In Tholo Ecc. Cathed. D.Pauli Lond. Jac. Thornhill Pinxt / Ger. Vdr Gucht Sculp. Lond."

The engraving dates from 1719 and was made by:
Gerard van der Gucht (publisher/printer; printmaker; British; Male; 1696 - 1776)

Sir James Thornhill (painter/draughtsman; British;; 1675 - 1734)
Painter of historical subjects working in the Italian baroque tradition. his works include the inside of the dome of St Paul's Cathedral and the "Painted Hall" at the Royal Hospital, Greenwich. in 1711 he was in Delft, Holland and painted a series of twelve plates with the signs of the zodiac. He was the father-in-law of William Hogarth, the painter and engraver, and the plates were inherited by Hogarth.
