Content: ‘La Poupée’ tells the story of a Sylph who is to teach love to ‘a young, still virgin and very conceited abbot.’

Jean Galli de Bibiena, born in 1709 in Nancy in a family of Italian architects and painters from Bologna, devoted himself to literature and wrote plays and novels.

‘La Poupée’ is a libertine novel published in 1747, and his best known book which was re-released several times. In 1763 Bibiena was sentenced to death for raping a little girl, and he was forced to flee to Italy to escape his sentence. This book, whose title seems a disturbing relationship with this sordid event, is nowadays best known to constitute a significant milestone of libertine literature, renewed in the light of the great thought transformations of his century. The publication of the complete works of Bibiena in 2014 shows the growing interest in its literary qualities, beyond the grey areas of sulphurous biography.

This book copy is in good condition.
