This crested mask is used for rituals of the Ciwara society, one of the six secret institutions organised by the Bambara people. It is attached to the head of the dancers, who all belong to the Ciwara society, by means of a wicker cap. The dances of the Ciwara society are bound to agricultural rites and thus to fertility. During these rituals, the mask became the characteristic of a costume dancer giving it life and speech. The mask found its meaning by the movements and more decided by the vector. The Ciwaras mostly danced as couples. These ceremonies took place in broad daylight, both at the centre of fields and in the village. They celebrate the mythical union between the sun, referring to the male principle, and the land, referring to the feminine, which simulates the diligence for work of young farmers.
