Berten Schepens is an interesting figure. Already before the age of 20 years he produced multiple beautiful woodcuts, as good of those by Cantré and Masereel. His series 'Ashaverus' from 1932 is one of the most sensitive series from this period.

Schepens had a versatile interest, including Norway, hence his later used pseudonym 'Nojorkam'. The pseudonym was simply composed of the initial letters of his first names Norbert Joris Kamiel.
After his starting period, he seemed to focus more on his painting, which was a great loss to the graphic art movement.

This original woodcut was published as a single page addition to the first volume of the art magazine ‘Kunst’ no. 8 from 1931.
This art magazine was founded in early 1930s in Ghent at the Nederkouter and only knew a fifth-year anniversary (1930-1935). It was founded by André Vincke from St Maertens Latem. The original print, distributed as annex, was printed with care. It is the period of Cantré, Minne, de Smet and coincides with a heyday period of the artistic woodcarving.

Schepens Norbert Joris Kamiel. Ghent 1911, painter, draughtsman, graphic artist, illustrator, author. Educated at the Academy in Ghent by O. Coddron. During his travels, he often came into contact with ancient culture, specifically in Greece and Rome, but he also found inspiration in his place of birth, the neighbouring countries and Scandinavia. His exhibitions were often based on one theme: whether is was a civilisation of a country or a region in a country. Flowers and herbs were also depicted quite often. From 1945, he did numerous sea and submarine scenes and later, special scene from the Lys valley, Italian cities and landscapes (1947), the abundance of flowers (Ghent Floralién 1950), sunny Spain, and later also the harsh Norwegian landscape. From the media: “Norjakam, who debuted in 1930, did both artistic and scientific research and was the first in our country to combine histology and crystallography in the arts. His universal interest for nature, humans and culture is homogeneously present in his work. Not only did he paint deep sea scenes and high mountain ranges, but he was also a very talented portrait artist and “N” has tested the boundaries of the concrete. He was open to all mindsets and tried to secrets of civilisations long gone with great passion, in order to dig deep and even to surpass it”. G Van Severen.
