Pair of wooden sculptures depicting putti, Cremona, Italy, 17th / 18th century. The sculptures come from Villa Barni Della Scala in Robecco Sull'Oglio, in the Cremona area, now seat of the Town Hall, and were carved by the famous Greek sculptor Rodope Creai, operating in Lombardy at the turn of the 17th / 18th centuries. I am attaching some pictures of the sculptures which are still present in the lobby of the building. They were part of the decoration of the room of Cardinal Barni, changed in 1900.
Dimensions: 77 x 15 x 11 cm. Weight: 2 kg each.

The item comes from the official Palazzo Barni Della Scala, donated by the heirs to the City and now seat of the Town Hall of Robecco sull'Oglio, where it is explained that the sculptures, now present in the building, were part of the furniture of another important palace of Counts Barni in Lodi. They were then transferred and adapted to Robecco's palace for Cardinal Barni in the early 18th century, where these putti used to decorate the window of the Cardinal's bedroom and then removed in a 1900 restoration by the owner Countess Rosa Baratozzi Della Scala. The sculptural work of the palace was signed by Rodope Creai, a sculptor who worked in Lombardy at the turn of 17th / 18th centuries and worked for the important families of the princes Meli of Soragna, the Counts Barni of Lodi and Cremona and the Count Della Scala of Verona. Not much is known about the sculptor Rodope Creai, who signed the works, but we know that he came from the Rhodope Mountains, on the border between Greece and Bulgaria. My sculptures come from Robecco's palace, where it is clearly seen that they are the same as those photographed in palace’s foyer, and were given to me by Countess Rosa Baratozzi Della Scala, Count Annibale Della Scala's second wife, in 1969. Countess Della Scala was a great friend of the family. I lived with her up to 10 years in London.
