Gerardus (Gerard) Baksteen (Rotterdam, 12 February 1887 – Turnhout, 25 February 1976) was a Dutch graphic artist, painter, watercolourist, illustrator, wood carver and book cover designer.
He was the son of Dirk Baksteen, the brother of painter Dirk Baksteen. He worked in Rotterdam and Mol in 1912, in Antwerp from 1913 until 1914, in IJsselmonde (Rotterdam) from 1914 until 1919, in Antwerp from 1919 until 1922, in Zoersel from 1922 until 1930, in Schilde Belgium from 1930 until 1948, in Rotterdam 1948, in Haarlem from 1948 until 1952 and then back in Antwerp.
In 1912, he met the artist Jacob Smits in Belgium and he went to work at his studio in Mol, Belgium. He painted still lifes, portraits, landscapes and flower arrangements. He was also a gifted wood carver and a very talented watercolour painter. He made woodcuts and designed the book covers for ‘De Berechtinge’ by Guido Gezelle and ‘Kerstmis in de Kempen’ in 1937 by Antoon Coolen voor Nijgh and Van Ditmar. He also illustrated ‘Prutske's Vertelselboek’ written by Stijn Streuvels.
He was awarded a silver medal in Rotterdam and from 1909 until 1912 received the royal subsidy.
This original woodcut was published as a loose-page addition to the first volume of the art magazine ‘Kunst’ no. 5 from 1930.
This art magazine was founded in early 1930s in Ghent at the Nederkouter and only existed for five years (1930-1935). It was founded by André Vincke from St Maertens Latem. The original print, distributed as annex, was printed with care. It is the period of Cantré, Minne, de Smet and coincides with a heyday period of the artistic woodcarving.
