Isicholo hat.  
Zulu, South Africa.  
Large hat made of hair dyed with natural pigments, deep red.  
Length:   50 cm.  
Zulu women wear large hats, named Isicholo (plural: Izicholo), like this one, to proclaim their marital status.  

These headdresses, like beaded decorations, were distinctive signs, enabling to decode the status and the identity of their owner.  
Rounded and conical hats which are the most widespread ones, are made of human hair, mixed with wool fibres, placed on a structure in wickerwork, dyed in red and then smeared with fat and ochre.  

These types of headdresses derive from a hairstyle of the late 19th and early 20th century.  
A that period, Zulu women shaved their heads, leaving just a tuft of hair, which they smeared with fat and ochre.  
Since the hair grew, they shaped it on a cone.  
The hat is sold without stand.
