These bronze bracelets were made in West Africa and were used for barter trade or as items of jewellery. These are locally produced bracelets. Since the 16th century Europeans bartered with Africa. They bought gold and paid for it with things like these bronze bracelets. A part of these bracelets was remelted by the local population for making art objects and jewellery. These handmade bracelets are unique. No two bracelets are the same. They are made of bronze. These bracelets were still used for barter in 1948. In that year they were taken out of circulation by the colonial powers, and were remelted and replaced by modern currencies.
