Antique Ersari trapping Turkmenistan, 148 x 45 cm.
First half of the 20th century.
A trapping with special (long and narrow) dimensions. A "trapping" (decoration for camels or donkeys) is a commonly used word for carpets with these dimensions.
Asymmetrical knots, open right, wool with a pile height of approx. 3 mm on a wool 2-string-twined grey/brown warp and doubly woven grey/brown bobbin.
This front features a beautiful, modest colour scheme with as extra a little-used camel-yellow colour. Natural colours extracted from indigo, madder and walnuts; with a beautiful abrash (colour variations that result from how the hand-spun and hand-woven wool is painted string by string, as well as from influences of time and environment). The mix of madder and indigo gives this piece the characteristic burgundy colour of other old Turkmen textile utilitarian objects All colours well fixed and the same at the front and back.
