Zimmermann studied at the Academy of Arts under Hubert Netzer from 1919 to 1932 and later became a master student in the sculpture class of Alexander Zschokke. Zimmermann was a supporter of Rhenish separatism. From 1932 to 1933 he studied in Berlin. In 1936 he moved to Düsseldorf-Golzheim, the artist house in Franz-Jürgens-Straße. In 1937 Kurt Zimmermann received the Cornelius Prize of the city of Dusseldorf for the bronze sculpture Eva, which he shared with the sculptor Ittermann.
