Hornbill skull fetish - FON - Benin
H. 11 cm ; W. 18 cm.
Interesting fetish composed of the skull of a hornbill, soil and plant fibres. The skull is over-shaped and painted. The orbital cavities are ornamented with kaolin. The top of the skull and the jaws seem to be attached with vegetable fibres. A rare and strong artwork. This fetish is attributed to the Fon of Benin, but it could also come from their neighbours of Nigeria, the Yoruba, the Ibo, the Urhobo... Around 1950. Placed on a stand.
