Artefact from the dunes of North Holland. Perhaps at the time in the possession of a Russian soldier from the Napoleonic army.
Icon in the form of a Russian or Byzantine cross: the vertical stem represents the tree of humanity, the top horizontal for the world of angels and the large cross bar for the world of men. The lower angels seem to carry the cross entirely, a repetition of the top angels (appliques) with their smaller cross (like a Droste effect).
Provenance: from an old Dutch collection, later in the private collection of the penultimate owner for decades.
