Around 1900 or earlier — Heavily weathered
This historical, ancient, stone-carved ‘GARAMUT’ slit drum comes from the village of Korogo (Iatmuel tribe) in Middle Sepik, Papua New Guinea. It is 180 cm long and 44 cm wide The whole of the drum portrays a dreaded saltwater crocodile;its tail morphed into a human face of an ancestor. Despite heavy weathering, the drum is still very heavy. It is at least 100 years old, but it could be much older.
