18th century - the Netherlands (Friesland province), Lead and used
In view of the fact that these small lead plates are exposed to wind and weather the quality may very somewhat. Thereanent the clarity of the stamped image was also not important when new (1760 etc.).
Largest measures: 6.5 cm x 7 cm.

These small lead shields were used by the roofers to cover the nail holes in lead roofing tiles, nails that were used
to affix them to the roofing beams. These 18th and 19th century lead shields
were stamped with their names and initials, hallmark, house marking and tools.
Of the thousands made only a few remain.
Luckily several have survived.
These are stored in museums and in private collections.
