Imari plate with horses - Japan - Early 19th century
Japanese Imari plate from the late Edo period (1800-1850), decorated in underglaze blue as well as overglaze red, green and gold. It is decorated with eight horses, probably the "Eight horses of Mu Wang" of Chinese mythology, as well as a "shishi", a mythical animal resembling a cross between lion and dog.
Diameter 21 cm (8.5"), no mark.
