The stained-glass windows of the St. Jans church in Gouda are the undisputed highlights of the stained-glass art in the Netherlands. A lot more of this fragile material was produced than was thought, before the technique of glass painting passed into oblivion around.
This is the first comprehensive survey of Dutch monumental stained-glass art. In addition to church windows which have been preserved in their original location, there is also attention for windows that have been scattered or lost. The author reconstructs the lost glass on the basis of excavated fragments, design drawings and archives. This material - introduced and catalogued by province - shows the leading role of Holland from c. 1550 until the early eighteenth century.
Against the background of political and religious developments, both Catholic and Protestant church windows are described and lost decoration programmes for public buildings and galleries are reconstructed. There is also attention for the givers of stained-glass windows, glass painters and anonymous artisans.
- Zsuzsanna van Ruyven-Zeman is an art historian, author of a monograph on Lambert van Noort, and of two volumes of the Dutch contribution to the Corpus Vitrearum series on Gouda glass. She is also the author of numerous publications in the field of stained-glass art and graphic arts from the Netherlands from the 16th and 17th centuries.
