Palm leaf books are typical of Asia, and their tradition is lost over the millennia.
They have fallen into disuse only in the 19th century, with the advent of printing presses. Were made on Palmyra and Talipot palm leaves, long up to 5 meters, which, after being boiled in a mixture of herbs, were then cut and pressed.
This process meant that they could endure hundreds of years even in hot and humid environments.
The engravings, made with a small knife, were then rubbed with a vegetable contrast or lampblack to make them readable.
Like all Buddhist texts, the one contained in this book also seems to be written in Pali or Thai.
The object of great collection value, it came to us from the acquisition of material of a great traveller and collector of the early 20th century who maintained diplomatic relations and business with Southeast Asia.
This book is the Ayodhyakanda, that is the second Kanda of the Ramayana, or "Rama's journey", a poem from circa the 3rd century BC.
l poem tells the exploits of Rama, the Avatar of Vishnu God of Trimurti, and it is nothing more than a collection of spiritual and ethical rules of conduct to follow, a very important text for Hindu culture.
