Woodblock print by Utatgawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) (reprint) - 'The Willow Tree at the Gate of the Shimabara Pleasure Quarrter' - From the series "Famous places of Kyoto" - Japan - ca. 1960

Mount Atago is seen far away veiled in mist with a wan crescent moon at dawn in the sky. The voices of merry-making men are heard through the entrance to the licensed quarter. A drunkard comes out helped by public women. Though gay and florid, there is something of pathos. At present the building is cultural properties and a tall willowtree and piled rainwater barrels by the gate are but the shadows of what they were in the old days.

Condition is very good. Only a little round scratch left above the roof. See the picture. (Picture nr 7)

This reprint is from around 1960. Sold by Uchida art co ltd, Kyoto Japan
