'Aguardentes' are spirit drinks resulting from the distillation of wine or other fermentable substances containing alcohol.
There are several types of 'aguardentes', but these one are vinous (made from wine) which means that belong to the same group as brandies.
But, under Portuguese law, the name Brandy is used to designate wine spirits prepared with an alcoholic strength of not less than 35 °, with a minimum period of six months in oak hulls, and may have characteristics conferred by the addition of legally permissible additives and additives.
Now, 'aguardentes velhas'must have an alcoholic strength of not less than 35 °, obtained by the natural aging of wine spirit in oak barrels of a capacity of up to 1000 liters for a minimum period of two years and which reveals the corresponding characteristics. 'Velhíssima' means 'very, very old', so with much more than two years aging in the barrels.
