Holland Animation Foundation - key setup - Man and Koko the Clown - Back to the Inkwell (1992)

Size: approx. 35 x 28 cm - Good condition

A so-called ‘key setup’ is the Holy Grail of animation art: one or more production cels, combined with the original hand-painted background, exactly as the image is displayed on film (Scene 18A). This is such a “key setup”, from the short film Back to the Inkwell by Ronald Bijlsma. This film also features Betty Boop and Koko the Clown, with the permission of Fleischer Studios. The entire film can be found on YouTube when you search for ‘Ronald Bijlsma Animations’.
The complete setup consists of no less than 4 cels: the background consisted of moving water, and therefore a couple of different blue backgrounds were painted, which in alternation gave the illusion that the water was moving. This is cel no. 3 of that moving background. On top of it, lies a cel of the image of the hand, which did not move for the entire scene, and thus a so-called ‘hold cel’. It even says ‘HOLD’ on the cel. The two characters each stand on their own cel: the man (cel A30) and Koko the Clown (cel B46). The letters A and B were used to indicate which cel had to be on top during recording.
A unique opportunity to own an original setup with the legendary Fleischer character Koko the Clown.
