For the Dan, masks are not the representations of the spirits of the bush, but they are these very spirits.
Several in their diversity, Dan masks are named Guégo, the “head of the mask”.
The wearer and the owner of the mask come from a very high rank within the hierarchy of the village.
They appear during masked festivities which could not be resolved by the chief of the village.
Those who do not respect the masks commit a serious crime against their society and their religion.
Among the Dan Bassa, some specificities enable to distinguish them from Dan masks.
Firstly in the case of so-called “Gela”masks, like this one, they have an imposing and complex hairstyle, a pointy scraggly chin and reproductions of scarifications.
The Gela are the incarnation of beauty. Smaller than a human face, they are destined to be placed on a larger rattan structure, which will fit the dancer’s face.
