The journals include "a series of travels and scientific geographical records of the most extraordinary character of seven years continuous work and new discovery”. Livingstone died on April 1873, his faithful servants Susi Chumi and Jacob Wainwright preserved his body and papers and brought them safely to England. [Mendelssohn] Livingstone's last diary covers the last eight years of his life, including the famous incident with Stanley. The addition of the narratives of Chuma and Susi, who carried Livingstone's body over a thousand miles to the coast so that it could be returned to Britian for burial, sparked a significant revival in Livingstone's reputation, which had suffered due to the perceived failure of several of his expeditions. These diaries rightly characterise Livingstone as deeply determined, and his entire focus was on bringing the institution of slavery to an end in Africa.
