This cannon was produced for the Amsterdam department of the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, possibly by Cyprianus Crans Janszoon. He worked in Enkhuizen from 1727 to 1733 before he was appointed town's gun and bell founder of Amsterdam in 1734. After his death in 1755, he was succeeded by the master bronze founder Peter Seest who continued to produce light cannons for the VOC. 

The markings are recognizable, although weak in some areas, including the mark of the maker, that at least "C. Crans" is visible and the "I.Z AO 1745" is worn but is mostly visible. The cipher of the Chamber of Amsterdam of the Dutch East India Company, “AVOC is a large "A" superimposed in the "VOC" logo (Amsterdam, Vereenigde East India Compagnie) is rendered in relief and is clearly recognizable. Above the second reinforcing ring is the proof mark of the three Saltires of Amsterdam, is clearly visible. The base ring markings for the Dutch weight is worn and not clearly visible although the letter "A" can be discerned. The cannon is mounted on a later carriage in need of restoration.

Mendel Lazear Peterson (2013) Encyclopaedia Of Markings and Decoration On Artillery Volume I & Part IIA2 page 636 negative no. F688-3/ see Rijksmuseum collection accession number 10368 for a similar cannon by this maker dated 1748. According to transcripts by Mandel Peterson, an example of a similar cannon by this maker exists in the collection of the Nederlands Scheepvaartmuseum.

According to the owner, the cannon was recovered by two fishermen off the coast of South Africa in the 1960's.
