Honoré Daumier (1808 - 1879) - Les Gens de Justice - Pleading in court
Fine lithography in perfect condition.
Tipped with two corners on a support sheet.
Daumier focusses on the main action of the trial, until the peroration, culmination of a pleading (a peroration in the Demosthenes) .
In the foreground are grouped left three lawyers who observe their colleague with funny faces. Sitting in the back, behind the horizontal table, motionless justices bring a static counterpoint to the great gestural impetus that carries the body of counsel.

The “Michelangelo of caricature,” Honoré Daumier famously satirized France’s bourgeoisie and justice system, and masterfully exposed the misery of the masses through the emerging medium of lithography. Grotesque caricatures of government officials endeared him to the public.
