Iginga sculpture representing a standing figure, supported by its strong legs, the position balanced by the slightly spread limbs, with a voluminous head carved in the strict extension of the torso. The arms and the legs are stylised according to a triangulation strongly marked by the muscular masses. Of great quality, the ornamentation of a perfect regularity regarding the motifs, which increase the geometric rigour of the sculpture, both front and back-wise. Wonderful patina, nuanced on some places.
This figurine is certainly one of the most beautiful specimens of this type, within the corpus of the Lega. It distinguishes itself both by the rarity of its type, by the great vigour of the sculpture, the intensity of the expression and by the beauty of its ornamentation.
Iginga ivory figurines are the exclusive and individual property of the initiates of the Bwami society of the highest rank, the lutumbo lwa kindi. In the absence of any information collected during its acquisition from the owner, it is unfortunately impossible to identify its specific meaning and name. More generally, every lutumbo lwa kindi initiate owns at least one figurine of this type, acquired during his accession to this highest rank. According to Biebuyck (in Tervuren, 1995: 381) most of the time, these figurines were inherited from a deceased parent, after having been exhibited on his/her tomb. Each one is associated to a specific aphorism. They “remind the virtues of the initiates of previous generations, they maintain the rules and moral, judicial and philosophical norms defended by their predecessors, they are the link between passed and present generations [and finally constitute] sacra’s, sacred objects filled with vital force” (idem).
The shiny patina was obtained during the kibongia masengo rite, during which the figurines are rubbed with oil and pigments, and then, perfumed. The very nice patina of wear of this piece of collection allows us to assume that it was used by several generations.
