Topoke, Dem. Rep. of Congo: An old ‘knick shield’.
A typical shield of the Topoke (also called Eso or Tofoke). From Northeast Congo. These Topoke shields are made of wood and are always constructed with a significant diagonal dent in the middle. The shield is overall coloured in black and braided with narrow rattan strips on its front side above and below, as well as on the side edges. The central, anterior surface made of thin wood. The backside consists of semicircular bamboo slats one on top of the other, which are braided in their entirety with rattan strips. The grip, too, consists of plaited rattan strips. Damage to the edges and corners, material loss. as well as with old usage patina.
The sizes are 96 x 45 cm. The weight is 2.4 kilos
