The Songye distinguished two”Nkisi” figure types, depending on size: Figures (up to 150 cm), which belonged to the whole village community and small figures (10 cm and more), which either belonged to a single person or a family.
Therefore, the figure offered here belongs to the group of the personal “Mankisi”, which were put up in the house and were supposed to protect the family against witch magic, illness and malevolent ghosts. They were passed on from generation to generation within a family.
People also used to carry these small personal “Mankisi” with them, if they had to leave the familiar environment of the village.
