Mid 20th cent.
‘Asen’ altars are memorial objects, somewhere for the spirit of the deceased to take up residence. During complex funeral ceremonies, an Asen is dedicated to the ancestor, and during the course of the year, offerings are regularly made to it. The depictions on the ‘hat’ often relate to the life of the deceased.
I am offering an object with a very reduced portrayal of a pair of birds.
The earliest example of an asen is from the 17th century.
Corroded metal, incl. stand.
