In very good state. From around 1900 or prior to that. On stand.

Provenance: ex – collection of the Reverend Fathers of Scheut, Anderlecht – Brussels. Bought from them by H. Westerdijk around 1970.

Scepters and similar emblems of office, like sticks, were handled by high chiefs among the Bakongo Nation, but are very rarely made of wood and usually are executed in ivory. They are frequently surmounted by a kneeling female figure, representing a founding member of the royal lineage or clan governing a kingdom. This lovely little object must have been in use by a person of rank, most probably a man. The lady is portraited as a female chief and wears the for her class typical bonnet. Her face, with glass – inset eyes, is characteristic of the style. She wears a necklace and a girdle. In her clasped hands she holds an object of uncertain meaning. Her kneeling position signifies respect and obedience. The grip shows the for such objects typical stepped platform, twisted middle part and flat – round finial. The difference of colour between handle and figure is striking; the lower part much darker as a result of much handling over many decades.

Literature: Jo Tollebeek and others: Mayombe, statuettes rituelles du Congo, Tielt, 2010, fig 97. See also Raoul Lehuard: Art Bakongo, les centres de style, second volume, Sarcells, 1989, K 1 – 1 -2 on page 556.

Dimensions: 25 x 5 x 6 cm.
Region / People: Vili – Woyo of Angola – Cabinda.
Material: Dense wood. Crossopterix febrifuga.
Weight: 0.143 kg.

Il faut noter bien que c'est une restauration indigène localement faite. Ca indique pour moi que cette pièce ètait bien aimèe par son propriétaire.Plutôt un plus.
