Ancient frame with golden carving, underlined by the black, smooth background. The painting presents points where it has been restored and relined. It is in overall good condition, considering its antiquity.
It represents the image of the Virgin and Child, crowned and in an embracing attitude. Iconographic model inspired in Byzantine icons of the so-called “Pagania Eleousa” or “Virgin of the caresses”. Its closest precedent was the canvas painted by Francisco Camilo for the San Juan de Dios parish in Madrid in 1662, which reached great popularity. The original disappeared when the church was set afire in 1936.
Good examples of this iconography are kept at the Museo Carmelitano de Alba de Tormes (Salamanca), the Museo de la Colegiata de Borja (Zaragoza) and in the Colegiata de Santa María de Berlanga de Duero (Soria).
The expressive harmony, the neat sweetness and sumptuary details are remarkable in this work.
