Honoré Daumier was a French printmaker, caricaturist, painter and sculptor. During his lifetime he was best known as a political and social satirist. He made a total of more than 500 paintings, 4000 lithographs, 1000 woodcuts and 100 sculptures. In the 1840s, he began his series of 39 prints "Les gens de justice", a satire on the justice system, to which this lithograph belongs.
Daumier's cartoons about lawyers and judges are still very popular amongst lawyers and adorn many lawyers’ office.
A second lithograph from the same series is also for sale (see last photo).
