Brass Miners Lamp by E Thomas & Williams - Brass
A safety lamp for use in flammable atmospheres, invented in 1815 by Sir Humphry Davy. Wick lamp with the flame enclosed inside a mesh screen. It was created for use in coal mines, to reduce the danger of explosions due to the presence of methane and other flammable gases, called firedamp or minedamp.
For over 130 years, these CAMBRIAN miners' safety lamps have been made in Wales for miners from heavy solid brass, with a milled tank and internal grid for protecting against explosion: equipped with a level wick, which can be fitted using a special mechanism, without opening the lamp. Number 38880 and marked E.T.W and with a trade mark to the base.
Tank contents: 100 ml for approx. 20 hours burning time.
