De artist James de Rijk was born on May 17th, 1806 in Hilversum. During his life, De Rijk mainly worked in his hometown of Hilversum. He did make some study trips to Belgium and Bentheim. De Rijk was a student of Jan van Ravenswaay. In 1828, he became a member of the Royal Academy in Amsterdam and in 1838 of the Verenigde Tekengenootschappen ‘Hierdoor tot Hooger’ and ‘Arti Sacrum’ in Rotterdam. De Rijk primarily painted landscapes with cattle and also drew and lithographed. He taught and often collaborated with artist Cornelis Bijlard. He has also taught H.R. de Flier, C.H. Hein, H.J. Hein, his own son Jacobus Augustinus de Rijk (Hilversum 1831 - 1897 Voorhout), Lion Schulman (Born: Hilversum 1851) and F.H. Sijpkens. James de Rijk died at age 76 in his hometown of Hilversum.
