The Sputnik 1 spacecraft was the first successful attempt to put an artificial satellite in orbit around Earth. It was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, in Kazakhstan (former part of the Soviet Union). The word sputnik means "travelling companion" in Russian. The official name is "Terrestrial Artificial Satellite"
Sputnik completed 1,440 rounds around our planet before disintegrating on January 4, 1958.
It had a mass of 84 kilos, and inside, pressurized with nitrogen, it had instruments to measure the temperature in the outer layer of the atmosphere.
Made in the USSR.
