This compass house with compass of Sestral Moore Company is painted black on the outside because it probably was used in war situations. The black paint was done to prevent glare/reflection. The inside is painted white to still hold a view of the compass. The compass was illuminated by an oil burner.
Sestrel is the trademark of Henry Browne & Son from Barking/London. This English instrument maker makes compasses, ship clocks, sextants etc for more than 140 years.
The compass is not gimbal mounted.
Serial number compass is No B4/4460L/46. Diameter bottom: 22cm Diameter compass house: 18 cm Diameter compass: 13 cm. Height compass house: 23 cm.
