Amsterdam, J.H. Schneider, 1773-1785 (volumes 1-17); Dordrecht, A. Blussé & zoon, 1793 (volume 18); Amsterdam, Johannes Allart, 1801-1805 (volumes 19-24). 4to. 24 volumes with index volume on the first 19 volumes. Bound in contemporary gilt-stamped half-leather bindings. With 892 hand-coloured full-page engravings and many hand-coloured and gilt-heightened engravings in the text (head pieces).

This publication is seldom seen in such beautiful colours, not even in the Dutch National Library. Really extremely rare.

Buffon was one of the most important, best known and most widely read scientists from the eighteenth century and employed by Louis XV. Buffon developed one of the world's leading scientific institutions in Paris, culminating in this exclusive edition.

It consists of 24 consecutive volumes from 1773 to 1805 with index and medal of the Earl of Buffon. The last two volumes (25 and 26) on birds are missing or have never been part of this collection.

Condition: good - with endpapers, well attached to the bindings, all spines are solid, but sometimes the leather is loose and mostly included, see pictures. The leaves and plates are not damaged by animals or moisture and are of exceptionally beautiful quality. Engravings by De Sève and Buvée.

The dimensions are: books: 25 × 30 cm. Paper: 26 × 21 cm. Plate edge approx. 20.5 × 15.5 cm. Length of 24 volumes: 110 cm, approx. 10,000 pages

Some of the prints are shown in the pictures, to give you an idea of the condition of this lot.
