The Eket are a small tribe in southeastern Nigeria, they are neighbours of the Ibibio and the Ogoni. Members of the Ekpo secret society danced with such round masks during major harvest festivals. This was done to give thanks for a good harvest, give thanks to their ancestors and to Mother Earth. In addition to praising fertility, the departed and important warriors were also remembered during these dance rituals.
