Émile Gallé, born in Nancy on 4th May 1846 and died in the same city on 23rd September 1904, is a French manufacturer, master glassmaker, cabinetmaker and ceramist. He was the founder and first president of the Nancy School in 1901.
He was a child of art and business and was one of the most influential figures of his time in applied arts and one of the pioneers of Art Nouveau. He was also a precursor in genetics and evolution concerning the plant world. His works, unknown to the wider public, are nevertheless of great relevance since they precede those of Gregor Mendel, describing its outlines. On the door of his workshop in Nancy, one could read this motto: “Ma racine est au fond des bois”. (My roots are in the heart of the woods) This is the full quote: “Nos racines sont au fond des bois, parmi les mousses, autour des sources” (Our roots are deep in the woods, among moss, around the origins).
