Original woodblock triptych by Toyohara Chikanobu (1838-1912) - ‘Tsuru onari’ (Hunting cranes) - From the series "Chiyoda no on’omote" (Chiyoda Outer Palace) - Japan - 1897

The Chiyoda Inner Palace (Chiyoda no Ōoku) series of 1895-1896, combined with this 1897 series Chiyoda Outer Palace (Chiyoda no on-omote) depict scenes of life in and around Edo Castle before the Meiji Restoration in 1868.

The triptych is showing a scene on the estate surrounding the castle. Men are seen hunting a red crowned crane with a falcon and two cranes fleeing on the left, a group of noble men observing the hunting activities in the back.

The red crowned crane was a protected bird by law. Only noble men were allowed to hunt or eat it. In the background the land surrounding the palace is shown with the impressive Mt. fuji rising above the clouds.

A richly detailed design by Toyohara Chikanobu with embossing on the feathers of the crane.

Size: Oban triptych, approximately 70.8 x 35.2 cm.

Overall condition is good. Slightly stained, backed, three separate panels. Please have a look at the photos for details. Will be sent with care in acid-free paper and sturdy cardboard packaging.
