J.G. Smits from The Hague was a pupil of Salomon Verveer. His early work belongs to the romanticism. He liked to paint city and village views. For this aim he travelled through the whole country. This beautiful work dates from a later period when Smits was more impressionistic. Smits taught Queen Sophie, first wife of King Willem III. His works can be found in many museums, including the Gemeentemuseum and the Boymans-Van Beuningen. The painting comes with a beautiful matching frame. Due to its size and fragility pick up is preferred.
