A rare and complete Japanese Tanto / sword with laquered wood Saya. What appears to possibly be a machine made 10 inch curved blade which indicates it could be a WW2 issued Tanto. Slotted metal Tsuba with copper habaki. The Tsuka is attached with a bamboo Mekugi pin, Rayskin wrapped with brown tsuka-ito. Fish styled Menuki. Unsigned Tang. Likely circa 19th Century, but I am no expert. Condition - In good condition. The blade has some spots of surface rust and pitting but is mostly in good order. Not oiled since use so does need sharpening and refurbishment. The metal mounts and Tsuba have a lovely original patina and are heavily rusted and pitted associated with age. The handle is complete with some minor loss to the rayskin. The saya with chips and losses to the wood. Measurements - Total length of Tanto 48cm (18.9”), blade 26cm (10.2”). Total weight 330g.
