Antique Copper Umbrella Stand - Copper
Decorative and useful French copper umbrella holder.
The container has been hammered so that it depicts 'de boerenbruiloft' in the copper.
Signed: Noce de paysans d'apres Breughel. The painting can be seen on photo.
‘De boerenbruiloft’ is a painting by the Flemish renaissance painter Pieter Bruegel the elder, it is one of his many paintings that depicts peasant life. It is currently exhibited at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
The bride sits under the canopy. It is not clear who the groom is. It could be the man in black, left of the largest figure, leaning backwards with a cup in his hand. Musicians are playing and the child in the foreground is licking a plate.
The feast takes place in a barn; two stacks of corn and a rake remind us of the work the harvest brings and of hard peasant life. The dishes are presented on a door which has been unhinged. The staple food is bread, porridge and soup.
The umbrella stand has a beautiful patina and has a worn look.
Dimensions: 54 cm in height and 26 cm in width (base). Weight: 1.5 kg.
