Selection of 23 rare antique Venetian beads (African trade beads) - 19th/20th centuries
Length from 8 mm to 38 mm; diameter from 6 mm to 13 mm; hexagonal bead = 25 x 32.5 x 12 mm; cord length 40 cm.
Many of the trade beads found in Africa come from Venice. Large quantities were exported to the African continent from the middle of the 14th century onwards. They were exchanged for goods: gold, oil, ivory... and slaves. It is increasingly difficult to find them there. Due to their old age, some of these beads have tiny chips.
