This book is in folio (40.3 x 25.3 cm) [UNCUT LARGE PAPER-COPY] with elaborately engraved title page [here in facsimile], and two letterpress titles. [x], 112, [ii]; [iv] 293, [7] pp.; over 500 woodcuts of plants, animals and some aboriginals. Later contemporary-style half calf. Spine with gilt vignettes, and gilt title.

Rare first edition with the leaves uncut and thus with widest possible margins. Borba de Moraes: "the most notable scientific work completed in that country in the 17th century. It presents the combined efforts of the Count de Nassau's physician Willem Pies (Piso) and the naturalist Georg Marcgraf (or Markgraf, 1610-1644) and later edited by J. Laet from Marcgraf's manuscript". See also Sabin, Nissen BBI and Boogaart and Hoetink's Joh. Maurits van Nassau-Siegen, a humanist prince in Europe and Brazil (1979) pp. 318-319, 483. This is the first scientific description of the nature of Brazil and Chile in the 17th century and it lasted untill the 19th century before it was continued by Maximilian Prinz zu Wied Neuwied, Martius and Spix. It is very important in regard to the natural history of southern America as it contains many new and for the first time descriptions of plants and animals (as far as we know the Quinine of Cinchona from Chile and the Lama from the Andes mountains and maybe several of the fishes from the river Amazone). Boogaart and Hoetink p. 483: "Of the 668 Brazilian species mentioned by Markgraf, most of them are newly described and never drawn before... Georg Markgraf was co-author of the Historia naturalis Brasiliae being responsible for the zoological and botanical part... Two of the representations of people follow the artist Eckhout's well-known portraits, while others such as the sugarmill follow Frans Post..." The first part deals with the medicine and plagues in Brazil, however by far the greatest part is devoted to the plants of Brazil, Chile and the Andes mountains. Some mild spotting, weak marginal waterstaining to the lower outer margin, a bit stronger in a few leaves, old, clumsy repair to the margin of G1-G2 and O2; paper loss to the lower margin of R3. Engraved title, C1 and K in facsimile.
