PROVENANCE: -Gustave Bulkens, gallery Dayak Antwerp, early 80 's.He collected all kind of Colon figures and once exhibited them all in the Mercator bank in Antwerp in the 80's.

Colon female figure from the Yoruba people of Nigeria holding a pylon and a two part stick. Jewelry around the neck and arm, and a hat on the head.
Wood, polychrome black and white paint Crack in base and arm re-glued.
The origin of Colon figures consisting in the contact between Europeans and Africans. Usually they show elements of the traditional style of the respective region. Frequently the African artists allowed wit and criticism to flow into their sculpture.
Wood is well oxidized.
USE AND SIGNIFICATION:
Often those type of figures where used to decorate the palaces of Kings.
The “Colon” figurines and statues refer to the colonial era in West Africa.
